CHANGING DYNAMICS

Question for the masses out there:

Soooo…What exactly IS hip hop these days? What does it look like? Where does it come from? Who represents it? Who owns it? Who controls it? Where’s it going?

I ask these questions because I heard the other day from a convo I was eavesdropping on a young woman telling a young man that he wasn’t “Hip hop”, and proceeded to go in on his outfit. As usual, it got me to thinking. To paint a picture, the young man had on some fad-tacular skinny jeans, large-rimmed black glasses, blue deck shoes, a sky-blue and light-green striped shirt, and a Kid & Play-style fade.

But I guess it’s not as important what he was WEARING or his APPEARANCE as opposed to what HE feels Hip hop is. To put it plainly, the lines of what Hip Hop IS continue to blur everyday. It’s not really enough anymore to assume that a young person walking down the street in Timbs and a hoodie can be considered “Hip Hop”. Just take a look at a few of the folks below…at first glance, you probably wouldn’t suspect that any of them have anything to do with Hip Hop music, culture, politics or lifestyle…and you’d be DEAD WRONG!

Beverly Bond, world-renowned DJ and Founder of Black Girls Rock!

K’Naan, Somalian MC and the Face of the Recent Coca Cola’s Multi-Million Dollar World Cup Marketing Campaign

Remarkable Current, Hip Hop Ambassadors for the U.S. Government in Indonesia and throughout several predominately Muslim countries

YelaWolf, Alabama MC and BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher contributor
Get the picture yet? If not, let me spell it out for you: There is NO ONE THING that we can label our beloved Hip Hop as anymore. Not only has Hip Hop gone global several times over, but it’s gone multi-generational, multi-cultural and is continuing to prove itself as a force to be reckoned with. So you’re from New York…does that necessarily make you MORE Hip Hop than a somebody from Brazil, Utah, Singapore, Idaho, Sudan, South Africa, Seattle, Japan or Vermont who has just as much love and respect for the culture as a whole?

Personally, I really enjoy the fact that Hip Hop has had such a big impact on so many different types of people from so many different backgrounds. Yeah, I know I’ve probably said it before, but heck, I’ll continue to say it and ram it home…IT’S AWESOME!!!

Just some food for thought. Please share some of your feelings. Thanks again everybody!
