New Song/Ad Campaign by Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is one of my favorite new artists these days. She came out with her debut EP on Bad Boy last year entitled “Metropolis: The Chase Suite” and it’s excellent! The lyrics and music on the album are nothing short of incredible, and I love the energy of her live show. She seems to give a lot of herself on stage and really asks the same of all of her band mates. Monae actually was part of the Purple Ribbon label Big Boi of Outkast put together. She even put out her EP independently before having dealings with PR or Bad Boy through the Wondaland Arts Society, which is a label she and her band mates put together themselves. Some of her main influences include James Brown, Prince and Mick Jagger. And if you’ve seen the video for “Many Moons”, then you know her stage performance encompasses moves from everyone from MJ to Andre 3000. AWESOME!

Now, Monae is starting to generate some big buzz and has partnered with Kia, along with a few other artists, for the Kia Soul Collective, a project made up of new artists to help promote the new Kia Soul. Now, of course, many people will say that this is an example of the way corporate companies are doing any and everything they can to stay afloat, while shamelessly involving artists like Monae. I personally say that this is a great new way for artists like herself and others to generate more buzz for themselves. There was a time when I would have said, “Aww, she’s just selling out!” But the more I learn about the business side of music and entertainment as a whole, it seems that Janelle Monae and other new up-and-comers are smart enough to realize that they now have more power than ever before. What’s wrong with an artist using a car company to promote themselves and their music?
